DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

Department of Civil Engineering, NMIT has been established with the aim of providing a high-quality education by providing the best guidance, facilities, and opportunities to the students to cater the needs of the society. The department was started in the academic year 2009-10 with an intake of 60 students. Later it was increased to 120 in the year of 2013-14. In the academic year 2013-14 the department also started M. Tech. program in Structural Engineering with an intake of 24 students. The department is a registered research center under VTU, Belagavi. Civil Engineering UG Program is NBA accredited consecutively for 3 times and is accredited till academic year 2026.

Recognised as one of the Best Civil Engineering College in Bangalore, The department is led by a team of qualified faculty members with expertise in various fields of Civil Engineering. The Department has its own library and well-equipped specific laboratories, Geo-Tech Laboratory, Concrete and Highway Laboratory, Environment Laboratory, Geology Laboratory, Survey Laboratory, CADD Laboratory, and the Hydraulic and Hydraulic Machines Laboratory. Additionally, the department is well-equipped with Structural Dynamic Laboratory for postgraduate students, featuring a 200-ton capacity Structural Loading Frame equipment, as well as a Software Training Laboratory. The department maintains extensive and robust industry-institute interactions through various Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs). The department is also dedicated to connecting its students to real world problems and solutions through conducting regular internships, workshops, site visits, and industrial visit, training etc. The department is privileged to publish its biannual magazine ‘Aarunya’ that highlights the department and students' achievements. It also provides a platform for students for their extra co-curricular activities like sports, NCC, NSS etc.

Infrastructure & Facilities

Basic Material Testing Laboratory

The Material Testing laboratory is equipped with a Universal Testing Machine (100T capacity), Compression Testing Machine, Hardness Testing Machines, and Impact Testing Machines to cater to the requirements of the curriculum. Additionally, the laboratories are utilized for testing and consultancy services, addressing both Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) requirements for Civil Engineering Materials.

CAD Laboratory

The CAD laboratory in the Department of Civil Engineering is furnished with high-end desktop computers. Additional amenities encompass Smart Boards, LCD Projectors, Laser Printers, Internet, and LAN Connections, as well as multi-user licenses for software including AutoCAD, ETABS, ANSYS, STAAD Pro, and Project Management – Primavera. Students utilize these software tools for the analysis and design of structures. Moreover, the lab is equipped with a 10KVA UPS along with 20 batteries for uninterrupted power supply.

Concrete and Highway Laboratory

The Concrete and Highway laboratory has Compression Testing Machines, Flow test tables, Slump test equipment, Abrasion testing machines, Marshall Stability test equipment, Vicat apparatus, and much more. Students use the laboratory for quality control testing of concrete and highway materials that are used in the construction industry.

Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory

The Geotechnical Engineering laboratory is equipped with Triaxial testing equipment, Direct Shear test equipment, Vane shear test equipment, CBR test equipment, Compaction test equipment, Core cutters, Sieves, Permeability test apparatus, and other equipment. Students use the laboratory to study the fundamental properties of soil to assess parameters such as the Safe Bearing Capacity of soil and CBR values pertaining to strengthening of the soil.

Hydraulic and Machineries Laboratory

The laboratory is used to reinforce and enhance the understanding of the fundamentals of Fluid mechanics and Hydraulic machines. The experiments here are designed to demonstrate the applications of the basic fluid mechanics principles and to provide a more intuitive and physical understanding of the theory. This laboratory exercise provides practical knowledge in measuring pressure, discharge, and velocity of fluid flow in channels and pipes. Also, the conversion of hydraulic energy possessed by the water in running turbines and the use of pumps to increase the hydraulic energy of water.
